An Army spokesman in Christchurch said that there had been a steady flow of recruits into the artillery and it was hoped that this would be maintained.

The job of providing a sufficient number of gunners for overseas tours has not always been easy. In addition to men recruited “off the street” the Army has relied on infantry with experience in Malaysia transferring to the artillery in Vietnam. Once all New Zealand’s troops leave Vietnam the only overseas service available will be in Singapore, with training in Malaysia. In the first quarter of 1971 Army recruiting in the. South Island is up 10 per cent over the same period last year, and is about the 1969 level.
