REMOVAL OF LICENCES
Farmers’ help sought W.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 23. The hope that Federated Farmers would be prepared to co-operate fully in the progressive removal of import licensing was expressed today by the Minister of Customs (Mr AdamsSchneider). A statement last week by Federated Farmers and the Retailers’ Federation criticised progress in dismantling controls.
Government policy was directed towards the removal of import licensing, the Minister said, but factors inhibited the pace at which this could be done.
“Negotiations have recently taken place with Federated Fanners and other producer organisations with a view to facilitating the removal of import licensing for agricultural produce,” he said.
This involved many items including eggs, honey, bulbs, vegetables, fruit and seeds and grain. However, Federated Farmers had doubts as to the' consequences of such action, and had so far not been pre-, pared to offer unqualified support to the speedy implementation of exemptions, the Minister said.
