Tory bill under fire
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, March 24. Opposition Labour Party M.P.s are making a lastditch stand today against the Conservative Government’s controversial Industrial Relations Bill. At dawn, the House of Commons had been engaged in debate for nearly 15 hours, and Labour members are hoping to continue their opposition to the measure until this afternoon.
Already there have been nearly 30 divisions on amendments to the bill, largely because the Government’s own amendments have not been debated. A strict time-table was imposed by the Government, limiting discussion, because it wants the measure to be passed quickly. Labour Party officials, acting on instructions from the Shadow Cabinet, are organising relays of M.P.s for the voting; some were sent home shortly after 2 a.m. and told to be ready to begin voting again at breakfast time. Today’s “marathon” brings the total time spent on the bill, including earlier debates, to more than 180 hours.
