Payments to Games
Of the 30 local bodies in the greater Canterbury area invited to make annual contributions towards the running costs of the 1974 . Commonwealth Games, 22 have made their first payment. Of the remaining eight, three Geraldine borough, Waimate borough and Kaiapoi borough—declined to contribute and this leaves initial grants still to come from Eyre county, Mackenzie county, Lyttelton borough, Temuka borough and Christchurch city. Under the scheme the local bodies have been rated at 11c a year a bead of population for five years and this will mean about $200,000 towards operating costs. So far slightly more than $20,000 has come in, but once the Christchurch City Council makes its annual advance of $lB,OOO, the yearly target of $40,000 will be just about reached.
