More than 800 Jews and their supporters were arrested near the Russian Embassy in Washington on Sunday night as they demonstrated against Moscow’s restrictions on Russiian Jews wanting to emigrate to Israel. Hours after the demonstration ended, people were still being charged, but most were being released, after paying the SUSIO bail set by the police. Most of the 'arrests were on charges of obstruction, after a protest "sit-down” at a main road crossing near the embassy. There were no reports of violence. Earlier yesterday about 2000 Jews had demonstrated outside the White House, urging President Nixon to put pressure on the Soviet Union to permit the free emigration of Jews to Israel.
