FREEZE OF PRICES
A two-month price freeze affecting about 70 per cent of the grocery lines stocked in its shops was announced by Wholesale Groceries (Chch), Ltd, yesterday. The firm controls 35 shops throughout Christchurch and all of them will observe the freeze from next Monday. The only items which win not come under the freeze are those already under price control —eggs, sugar, flour, butter and bread—and fresh produce where prices are affected by auction sales. All other grocery lines would be held at the prices ruling next Monday morning except that any reductions in price by the manufacturers would be passed on to the consumer, the managing director of the firm (Mr O. Beaumont) said last evening. Any increases in prices by the manufacturers would be absorbed by the firm, he said. He said that the decision to have the voluntary freeze had been made because it was felt there was a need to stabilise prices. None of the heads of the three major retail grocery combines in Christchurch
were available for comment last evening.
