POOL AGAIN IN DISPUTE

The Wharenui Coronation Pool and its availability for training to swimmers outside the Wharenui club was again questioned last evening at the Canterbury Swimming Centre’s management committee meeting. Mr S. V. Williams said it was disturbing that a girl (Miss C. J. Whiting) who was the New Zealand swimmer nearest to a world 1 time had to leave the city because she could not obtain suitable times for training. Mr J. Monck said Wharenui was dictating the times

which were available to other clubs wanting to use the pool. Mr A. T. Gray, a member of the Wharenui club, said all the facts regarding the availability of the pool were not known and he was not going to elaborate. Mr Monck and Mr Gray began speaking together, defending their respective cases, until brought to order. Mr Gray rose to leave the meeting but was persuaded to stay by the chairman (Mr D. P. Truscott), who said the committee was there to discuss centre matters and not those of individual clubs.

Diving.—Mr Truscott will ask the Centennial Pool superintendent whether Canterbury divers would be able to use the diving board from the pool while the pool Is under reconstruction in preparation for the 1974 Commonwealth Games. If available, the board will be transferred to another pool in Christchurch. Long service.—The centre will recommend that Mr N. Robertson receive the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association’s honours award for long service. Mr Robertson, a member ot the N.Z.A.S.A. council, has been a long serving judge with the centre. Winter championships.—The centre will apply to hold the 1971 winter championships, subject to the availability of the wharenui Pool.
