COUP BID FAILS
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) FREETOWN (Sierra Leone), March 23. An attempted military coup and a bid to assassinate the Prime Minister of Sierra Leone (Dr Siaka Stevens) and some of his Cabinet Ministers failed early today. First reports say that two soldiers were killed in an attempt to enter the Prime Minister’s residence, which was badly damaged. In 1967, Dr Stevens, who is 65, was placed under arrest in an Army coup only minutes after being sworn in as Prime Minister when his All People’s Congress Party won the General Election. He went into exile in neighbouring Guinea, returning after a countercoup just over a year later, and was sworn in again in April, 1968. Last October, he announced that his Government had uncovered plots to kidnap leading Cabinet Ministers and hold them as hostages for the release of people detained under emergency powers.
