RUBBISH BAGS
Preparation for change An order for 130,000 paper rubbish bags has been placed by the Riccarton Borough Council in readiness for its collection system which will begin on January 1 next year. Borough officers have been authorised to call tenders for alternative types of bag holders in quantity. A free wall holder will be distributed to each property. It is intended that 50 bags in one lot each year will be supplied to each rate-paying property. No limit will be made on the number of official bags uplifted at each collection, and the rubbish may include lawn clippings and light garden refuse. The Mayor (Cr R. J. Harrington) said he was delighted lawn clippings were to be included as this would mean getting rid of flies and this made for a healthier district. He said the council would not discriminate between a rate-paying property and a rented one. Commercial and industrial premises would, where required, have twice weekly collections of rubbish.
