Kaiapoi High School name chosen
Kaiapoi High School was the name chosen last evening for the township’s first secondary school due to open in February, 1972.
The name of the new school, the second of a special design of secondary school which will be opened by the Department of Education in the South Island, was selected at a meeting of the Christchurch Secondary Schools Council. School uniforms are to be decided upon before the August school holidays. A
principal for the school will be selected by then. The council decided that enrolments should be accepted from the beginning of June with final consideration to be established by July. The secretary of the council (Mr P. V. Halligan) said the new high school would accept all children who applied from Kaiapoi. “In view of past experience however, I would consider that for the first year the school may have a light roll,” he said; "however, after this the numbers on the roll will rocket I am sure.”
A representative of the Kaiapoi Borough Council said that the enrolments would be determined by the availability of free bus transport. The council decided to write to the superintendent of education in Christchurch (Mr H. M. McMillan) seeking a clarification of the transport situation governing the admission of pupils spread over a wide area.
There was no clear indication yet that the school would have a swimming pool ot gymnasium within the foreseeable future. This would be a matter for the new schools official board of governors when it was elected, Mr Halligan said.
