Good yield in rice crop

(N.Z. Pre» Aitociation) TAURANGA, March 21. Rice harvesting has once more begun in the Kaituna Basin, where Mr E. A. Vercoe, of Te Puke, last week began cutting his sixth consecutive crop of rice. Planted in early spring last year, the crop suffered badly during unseasonal flooding in November, with the result that only about 80 of the 120 acres planted have matured. Mr Vercoe said, however, that the plants which have matured have yielded a good amount of rice—about two and a quarter tons to the acre which is good by world standards and most hopeful for New Zealand, where growing conditions are not the most suitable.
