STEPHENS TRANSFER
Search for loophole (N.Z. Press Atjn.-—Copyright) SYDNEY. The Sydney Rugby league club, St George, is checking on a possible loophole which would allow it to avoid paying a transfer fee for the former All Black winger O. G Stephens. Under an agreement betwevn the Australian and New Zealand leagues, St George would be required to pay a transfer fee of $6OOO for Stephens. This would apply even though Stephens did not play league in New Zealand. The St George club secretary, Mr F. H. Facer, confirmed yesterday that the club planned to check with the N.Z.R.L. on Stephens’ case, because the winger has not played international football since the agreement came into force. Mr Facer also confirmed speculation that the club would not be interested in Stephens if it had to pay the transfer fee. Stephens turned out for the club’s reserve grade side on Saturday, and impressed with His play. He scored a try.
