STUDENTS’ MEETING

The University of Canterbury Students’ Association is still concerned at the actions of the police in the implementation of the narcotics laws. At last evening’s annual meeting of the association, the 1970 president (Mr D. B. Cuthbert) said in his annual report: “The association continues to believe that marijuana should not be regarded as a narcotic in terms of law and considerable opposition rests within the student body to the stand taken by Professorial Board’s discipline committee in regard to this issue.”

Many students believed, he said, that the university had no right to exercise a second and more discriminatory line of punishment for students convicted in the courts of traffiicking in narcotics. Mr Cuthbert said that the university’s relationship to the United States Air Force satellite tracking station at Mount John in South Canterbury waa coming under increasing criticism. Mr Cuthbert said that the university had no place being involved with military forces, let alone those of a foreign power, in the conduct of their activities.

Bursary rise sought

Unanimous support for negotiations between ■ the Government and the New Zealand University Students’ Association aimed at increasing student bursaries was given by last evening’s annual meeting of the Canterbury University Students’ Association. The meeting also supported the possible full payment of tuition fees and increases in hardship allowances but requested their negotiators not to concede any increase in the cost of the single unit tuition fee.
