CONTROL OF DOGS

The necessary legislation is to be sought for an additional registration fee for unspayed bitches—such a fee to be set at a figure greater than the cost of spaying; dogs registered in the “working dogs” category to be excluded from such a fee.

This was reported to the City Council last evening when the minutes of a meeting held last month to try to obtain uniformity of dog control in metropolitan Christchurch were laid on the table. Officers of the City Council, Waimairi, Paparua and Heathcote County Councils were at the meeting.

The meeting recommended that no further action be taken in the notification or registration of litters as the required legal authority did not exist and, even if it did, would be virtually unenforceable. No further action was recommended on the sales of puppies being permitted only from registered kennels, the owners of such kennels to inform the local authorities of the names and addresses of those to whom the puppies are sold.

The meeting recommended . that further investigation be undertaken into a metropoli- ■ tan by-law for enforcing con--1 tinual control of dogs.
