LAOTIANS IN BATTLE
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) VIENTIANE, March 22. Royal Lao Government troops and Communist forces were locked in battle today just north of the Royal capital of Luang Prabang, a Defence Ministry spokesman said. The spokesman, General Thongpanh Knoksy, said that heavy fighting was reported in three locations between a mile and a half and eight miles to the north of the city. The fighting came after a second rocket attack on the Luang Prabang airfield, which lies along the east bank of the Mekong river about a mile-and-a-half north-northeast of the city.
General Knoksy said that the North Vietnamese fired 20 122 mm. rockets into the airfield early this morning, hitting the nearby ammunition depot which exploded. The general said that North Vietnamese battalions followed up the rocket attack with simultaneous assaults on six Government positions lying between Luang Prabang and Pak Ou, a small riverside town 22 miles northeast of the capital.
