STUDENT HOUSING
Many university students throughout the country would be unable to pursue their studies next year because of the lack of suitable, reasonablypriced housing, the development officer for the New Zealand University Students Association (Mr F. Baird) said in Christchurch on Friday.
He said that a radical reexamination of the need for large student halls of residence should be undertaken. “Such accommodation caters for only a proportion of students and it is mostly for those who can afford the high cost of such living. Some of the weekly cost per student for this type of accommodation is as high as $16.50.” Mr Baird said that the New Zealand student community looked with hope towards the outcome of a two-day seminar to be held on student accommodation in May. The seminar will be attended by the Minister of Education (Mr Taiboys), vicechancellors’ representatives, students* association officers, nrivate architects and officials from Government housing.
