Finn race to de Thier

The national Finnclass yachting titleholder, B. G. de Thier, had the unusual experience of losing the lead on two occasions before he won the third heat of the Christchurch club’s class championship on the Estuary yesterday. J. S. Wearn held a ssec advantage over de Thier midway through the first run and after slipping back to third before the bottom mark, he again temporarily took the initiative on the beat.

However, one lap later de Thier was again in front, al-though-there was only 20sec separating de Thier, Weam and D. Campbell when they began the final leg: de Thier finally crossed the finishing line 35sec ahead of Weam. Wearn, who especially appreciated the light easterly conditions, and Campbell swapped boats for the race, Weam sailing Hi Jinx and Campbell being at the helm of Jolifin. N. and G. England, who won their second New Zealand J.C. championship l earlier this season, were also forced to come from behind to win their division. For much of the event they trailed R. Ineson and N. Jackson.

Two prominent skippers, G. C. Penney (catamarans) and P. Lester (O.K. dinghy class), cost themselves winning chances by taking an incorrect course. 'The England brothers had also gained line-honours during the schools’ regatta at the Christchurch club on Saturday, leading throughout to beat M. and G. Stevenson by nearly 4min. Another family combination, M. and G. Stemmer, was third. P. Maynard won by only 1 sec from T. K. Stevens after a most interesting P class duel. Maynard had led his rival by margins of up to Imin until the last beat, when Stevens momentarily took control. But Maynard prevailed in the finish. P CLASS The P class A division championship at the Mount Pleasant club was won by J. Smith, who was unbeaten in the two heats during the week-end. In the B division, M. Dryden took both the championship and handicap prizes. A victory in the second race yesterday brought A, Salisbury the Cowper Trophy and R. Hydes and B. Papps were the handicap winners of the catamaran races sailed from' the club. Results:— SATURDAY Christchurch club Schools* regatta.—Open handicap (four started): Sunmaid (C.
