“Swimmer of Year”

The men’s and women’s national 200 metres freestyle champions, A. B. Kindred and Miss J. A. Wright, both lost over the distance at the Sockburn Park television carnival on Saturday afternoon.

Kindred, who won three national titles and has had a most successful season, had it pleasantly capped off when he was named Canterbury "Swimmer of the Year” at the conclusion of the carnival. Although he was beaten in the 200 metres event he provided one of the most interesting races of the programme when he pulled back a two-lehgth deficit over the last 70 metres. Kindred was gaining fast on a tiring G. Walker but failed by a touch to take the event. Miss Wright, who had been “Swimmer of the Year” for the previous two seasons suffered a loss in the 200 metres to her young rival, Miss J. Parkhouse. Both girls swum stroke for stroke over the whole distance with Miss Wright leading until the last 45 metres. Miss Parkhouse took a slight advantage at the final turn and

held it to win by less than an arm’s length. Both girls recorded fast times. Some very fart time* were recorded at the carnival, which was the laat major meeting of the 1970-71 seaaon In Canterbury. The handsome television trophies awarded to the outstanding boy and girl swimmers at the carnival were won by R. Callon (Eastern Districts) and Miss W. Wakefield (Wharenui), formerly of Westport B. Lewis, who has made rapid progress this season, particularly since returning from six weeks coaching in Australia with Mr D. Talbot, returned another good time for the 100 metres breaststroke. He powered his way

through the water to record one of his best times of the season, Imln 18.5 sec.

R. McCabe, in his club pool swum an aggresive race to win comfortably the junior boys 200 freestyle in the creditable time of 2min 12.8aec. After taking the first 100 metres easily McCabe increased his stroke rate and wore down the other entrants. He finally won comfortably by about three lengths. Miss S. J. Hunter gave another display of her remarkable ten* acity when she fought off a de* termined Miss Wnght in the women’s 400 individual medley. Miss Wright tore into the first leg (butterfly) and at one stage had a slight lead, however Miss Hunter kept pace and had a small advantage at the comple* tion of the leg. Miss Hunter gained about a length over the next two legs but Miss Wright gained slightly on the final freestyle leg, but Miss Hunter had enough in reserve to fight off the challenge. Callon won the under 11 boys’ 100 breaststroke by more than Bsec in the fast time of Imln 38.5 sec. A Timaru boy, considerably more should be heard of him next season if he competes in Christchurch.

Miss Wakefield who has made a name for herself in breaststroke this season beat girls two years older in the under 14 200 breaststroke. This performance, in which she beat the Canterbury representative Miss J. Mills, was instrumental in gaining her the television trophy. Recently Miss Wakefield shifted to Christchurch where she has joined the Wharenui club. With Its strong competitive ranks and under the eye of Mr V. T. Parkhouse, Miss Wakefield should improve further on the remarkable time* she has produced this season.
