OFF-SHORE RACE

Three yachts finish off-shore race held by the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club on Saturday. The event was confined to yachts complying with the s ® Bst oi safety equipment. The course lay from Lyttelton moles round a triangle extending from the heads to marks off Jhe Waimakariri River and Little Akaloa.

At first the fleet made good progress but later in the afternoon winds lightened so that conditions became most unpleasant. The high swell and little wind persuaded many skippers to retire. Though the end of the race was in sight for the leader, Tactile Too (C. and N. Jones), the torment was not over. A wind shift allowed Prospector (R.Llovd) to gain the advantage and slip past her. It was reported that it took the Tactile Too five hours to reach port from the whistling buoy. Rebel (A. Allan) was the eventual winner on correctedtime, 1056.23, an outstanding performance from a trimaran and a newcomer to the field. Prospector, 1179.35. was second, and Tactile Too, 1257.06, third.
