EDUCATION FUND

Students help Islanders The Canterbury University Students’ Association has contributed $125 towards the establishment of a Polynesian Education Foundation, suggested by the Minister of Maoris and Island Affairs (Mr Maclntyre). This is the first contribution in answer to a request from the president of the New Zealand University Students’ Association (Mr D. B. C. Cuthbert) for $lOOO to be given by students towards the foundation.

The president of the Canterbury association (Mr D. F. Caygill) said yesterday that Mr Maclntyre had recognised that Islanders in Auckland—the largest Polynesian city in the world —were discriminated against in the New Zealand education system. “The member-associations of the N.Z.U.S.A. endorse the challenge offered by Mr MacIntyre for a Polynesian Education Foundation. In endorsing this we also call on the support of all organisations and individuals who are concerned, to find practical ways to ensure equality of opportunity for Maori children,” Mr Caygill said.
