Mr Burgess elected (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Mr G. C. Burgess, manager of the 1969 New Zealand cricket team in England, India and Pakistan, and a member of the New Zealand . Cricket Council’s board of ’ control, has been elected an - honorary member of the M.C.C.
This rare honour, accorded to only a handful of New Zealanders, w|s contained in a letter mailed from the i M.C.C. the day after Mr Burgess’s son, Mark, had scored . a century against England. The letter read: “The M.C.C. committee have recently decided to invite a fur ther number of overseas cricketers and administrators to become honorary life mem-' bers of the club, as a token of our appreciation of the distinguished service they have rendered to the game. “It is with real pleasure that I write on behalf of the pre- ■ sident and committee to convey this invitation to you. We should be very happy to think of you as a member of the club.” The letter was signed by Mr S. C. Griffith, the M.C.C. secretary, and manager of the M.C.C. team in New Zealand in 1966. Mr Burgess said today that he was delighted to accept the honour. “I take this as a tribute both to New Zealand cricket and to the 1969 touring team which I was lucky enough to manage," he added.
