The Turkish President (Mr Cevdet Sunay) has named a former law professor,, Mr Nihat Erim, a member of Parliament from the Republican People’s Party to be Prime Minister, the semiofficial Anatolian news agency announced. Mr Erim will resign from the Democratic Socialist Party to take the job. His mandate as an independent leader would be to put together a coalition government acceptable to Turkey’s major parties and to the armed forces commanders who threatened to seize power last Friday, toppling the Conservative Government of Mr Suleyman Demirel.
