Union ships laid up
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 19. Five Union company ships are now laid up in Auckland because of crew shortages. “We would like to see the ships running today,” said the Auckland branch manager of the company, Mr R. C. Stevens. “The shortage of ships’ officers and engineers is a problem not only troubling us, but is world-wide. It affects our whole community because trade is being affected.”
The national secretary of the Marine and Power Engineers, Mr C. S. Harnett, said the problem was a shortage of mainly first and secondclass certificated engineers. Many engineers had to accumulate leave instead of being able to take it, he said. The ships laid up here are the Kaimai, Konini, Karamu, Kaimiro, and Tarawera.
