PENSIONERS IN HOVELS
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)
CANBERRA, Feb. 26. One in every 16 Australian pensioners is living in a hovel, according to a survey compiled by the Social Services Department. It shows that 50,000 pensioners in the inner suburbs of Sydney, Melbourne, and other state capitals are living in “privately-owned hovels” for which they are paying exorbitant rents. The survey is now in the hands of the Minister of Social Services (Mr William Wentworth), who is expected to propose moves by the Government to relieve areas of proven hardship. But no action is expected before the Federal Budget in August.
