Visit to his old school
Hagley High School yesterday welcomed one ’ of its most dis- ' tinguished former pupils, Professor J. B. Condliffe, of the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Condliffe attended the school more than 60 years ago, when it was one of the first district high schools in New Zealand. Since then he has had an outstanding career as a scholar, historian, and economist, earning an international reputation as a lecturer, writer, consultant and adviser.
After completing his M.A. at Canterbury University College he served overseas with the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force. In 1919, he was awarded scholarships to attend Cambridge University and on his return to Christchurch in 1929 he became Professor of Economics at Canterbury ’ University College. ! In 1927 Professor Condliffe i became research secretary to the Institute of Pacific Rela- , tions, Honolulu, and during 11930-31 was also visiting I professor of economics at the . University of Michigan. ; LEAGUE OF NATIONS I Late in 1931 he was appointed to the Secretariat
of the League of Nations, leaving this in 1937 to become Professor of Commerce at the London School of Economics. In 1939 Professor Condliffe took up the position of Professor of Economics at the University of California from where he retired in 1958. He is now a professor (emeritus) at the university. Professor Condliffe met members of the school staff and pupils yesterday morning and spoke to a senior form studying economics.
