AUCKLAND, Feb. 24.
New Zealand could within 20 years increase lamb exports earnings s2som a year by doubling lamb percentages with the introduction of European breeds, said Dr K. B. Cumberland, professor of geography at Auckland University today. Overseas experiments with a variety of European sheep breeds had brought lambing percentages from 180 to 250.
“They lamb twins as hoggets and they can be mated every eight months,” he said. “Applied widely to the New Zealand national flock of 43 million ewes, the use of these breeds could theoretically raise the number of ‘lambs tailed’ from 41 million to 80 million.” The number of lamb carcases, surplus to replacements and domestic market requirements, could be raised from 24 million to more than 60 million, he said.
