Road safety scheme
“There are many thousands of motorists in Christchurch who don’t know the basic rules of the road,” said Mt R. N. Etwell at a meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee last evening. Mr Etwell (Canterbury Car Club) was elected the committee’s delegate to approach advertising media in Christchurch regarding the possibility of making the public more aware of road rules. The committee intends to run a series of question-and-answer programmes on road safety and the Road Code. The Ministry of Transport representative at the meeting (Senior Traffic Officer I. W. McLauchlan) said that the scheme would have the Ministry’s co-operation.
Mr Etwell proposed the scheme because, he said, he felt that the committee was not doing enough to promote road safety. The chairman (Mr R. S. Mayer) said that the scheme would be limited by the funds available. At the moment, the committee had $430 in hand, but “this was nothing” when compared with the costs of advertising.
