Monowai A almost beaten by West

Christchurch West almost caused an upset when it led Monowai A, already a comfortable championship winter, until the sixth innings before losing 3-4 in the final round of games in the Canterbury senior women’s competition at North Hagley Park on Saturday.

Monowai A tied the game after a fine turn-around in the sixth and seventh innings, and then managed to snatch the winning run in the eighth innings.

In the other senior games, Vanguard managed a run in the sixth innings and held on to beat Western Suburbs after the teams had been tied at 3-all. A three-run fourth innings by Spreydon was the turning point in its game against Monowai B which it eventually won, 6-3. Monowai A has thus added yet another championship title to an already impressive list, and Christchurch West and Spreydon have tied for second place.

Monowai A 4, Christchurch West 3

Christchurch West dominated the early part of its game with the champion as it moved to a very promising three-run lead in the first five innings, while shutting out Monowai A at the same time. M. Alderson scored in the first innings after a hit by J. Patterson and a sacrifice by V. Chambers. E. Ching added the second run on errors in the second innings and Patterson the third in the fifth after a good hit by K. Noonan. Monowai A failed to score in the early innings although it had a runner on third base in the second innings and loaded bases in the third. B. Turbott opened her team’s scoring after a sacrifice fly into the out-field by a team-mate in the eighth innings. Then the Christchurch West fielding yielded to allow J. Lee to score on errors and J. Moher

to tie the game after a sacrifice by M. Eaton and a hit by E. Law. Christchurch West had a runner on base in the eighth, but she failed to score. Monowai’s first batter, N. Beale, hit safely, and stole to second base. She was advanced by A. Lee and scored the winning run when J. Moher hit to right-field. The experienced Monowai pitcher, B. Makinson, completed the game with three strike-outs and conceded three hits, while her opposite, P. Chambers, gained a strike-out and gave up 10 hits. ,

Vanguard 4, Western Suburbs 3

Western Suburbs took the early lead when R. Seddon scored after a triple-base hit by P. Alston. Alston also scored on a hit by S. McCullough. S. Barry added the third run when she hit a double and was advanced to home plate by two good sacrifices by G. Larson and V. Brook. Vanguard, which had gained all its runs with a determined rally in the second innings, scored the winning run in the sixth innings. The first batter up, M. Hirama, hit safely and scored on a hit by J. Goss. Spreydon 6, Monowai B 3

H. Thyne and J. Mayhew gave Spreydon an early lead when they both scored in the first innings, but Monowai B replied with its second turn at bat by scoring three runs. Good hits by S. Stocker and A. Teague and a triple-base hit by W. Anderton contributed to the runs. However, that was the end of the Monowai challenge as Spreydon swept to a lead with three runs in the fourth innings, mainly because of some driving batting by S. Pateman, M. Lee and A. Caddie. B. Hawthorn added a sixth run on errors in the sixth innings and Spreydon did not require its final bat.
