Riot stops meeting
(N.Z. Press Association)
Thousands of irate race fans rioted on Saturday when a longshot winner paid off like a favourite at the San Isidro Racetrack, the Associated Press reported.
They smashed the tally board, windows and benches and invaded the track area after Molle paid less than 6-1 to win in the third race.
The horse had finished out of the money in its last few races and many of the 36,000 fans obviously felt the dividend should nave been much higher. They calmed down after the Racing Commission announced that provisional suspensions had been meted out to the trainer and Jockey pending an investigation. The remaining races for the day were cancelled.
