Wellington fire risk

(N Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON,

Feb. 14.

Palls of smoke in the Hutt and Tauherenikau Valleys today underlined the dry-weather fire risk worrying fire brigades in the greater Wellington area.

The Forest Service staff kept watch last night on a bushfire that was reported burning on a 300 yd front late on Saturday near the Tauherenikau Hut. It was confined to a three-

acre zone at the top of the valley late yesterday.

The Lower Hutt Fire Brigade sent an appliance to the Wainuiomata Hill Road yesterday afternoon after a flareup in the wake of a major gorse fire that started in the area six days ago. There is now a total ban on open fires in the Welling-

ton area as a result of a Forest Service warning that the fire risk has reached a dangerous level. The ban includes barbecues and incinerators.

The Meteorological’ Service says that there will be little immediate respite from dry conditions.
