CURRIE CUP
Title hopes fading (N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG. Western Province, needing only first-innings points to become Currie Cup cricket champions for the first time in 15 years, watched its title hopes fade yesterday as it lost its five best batsmen for only 142 runs. If Western Province fails to collect any points on the last day of the match, Transvaal, with a first-innings score of 252, could still take the title in its last game against the lowly Natal early next month. Close of play scores on the second day of Currie Cup matches were:— At Johannesburg: Transvaal 252 (P. Swart 4/64), Western Province 142/5 (P. Devaal 3/29). At Pretoria: North-Eastern Transvaal 419/7 declared (D. Lindsay 125, I. Finlay 971, Griqualand West 196/4 (M. Doherty 67). At Bloemfontein: Transvaal 397/7 declared beat Orange Free State 149 (P. Strydom 70; A. During 3/20, R. Muzzell 3/21) and 219 (Muzzell 6/69) by an innings and 29 runs.
