SUIT OVER MY LAI

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) COLUMBUS

(Georgia), Feb. 7. The Federal Government has asked the United States District Court to dismiss a SUS4OO million damages suit filed on behalf of 58 Vietnamese survivors of the alleged massacre at My Lai in 1968, the Associated Press reported. The suit names the United States Government, the Secretary of Defence (Mr Melvin Laird), the Secretary of the Army (Mr Stanley Resor) and Lieutenant William Calley, jun., as defendants. Federal lawyers said that the suit fails to state a claim upon which relief could be granted, and that the United States District Court is without jurisdiction. An attorney for Lieutenant Calley filed a similar motion earlier. The suit was filed in December by the Amsterdam lawyer, Mr Paul Narkin, whose firm specialises in international law. Mr Narkin said he represents the United Buddhist Congregation of Vietnam.
