Fountain to be blessed
The Stewart fountain at the corner of Colombo and High Streets will be officially commissioned on February 25 at 1 p.m. The structure, built at a cost of more than $14,500, has been donated to the city by Mr R. H. Stewart, managing director of P.D.L. Industries. Designed by the Christchurch architect, Mr P. J. Beaven, the fountain will contain a modern sculpture, the work of Mr L. Karasek. The sculpture, through which the water will flow will be erected this week and tested in conjunction with special lighting effects round the edge of the pool.
The sculpture is designed so that water will run in a cascade down one of its sides and this will be illuminated.
At present the aluminium sculpture is being assembled for erection after having been polished and anodised.
The vicar of St Michael’s (the Rev. P. B. Baker) is to conduct a ceremony at which the fountain will be blessed.
