Tariff on imports from South Africa
Sir, —G. M. Edmonds talks about the terrific tariffs consumers must pay to humour my dislike for anything South African. Surely it is easy for any clown to understand that for a foreign country to receive better tariff treatment than the preferential Commonwealth tariff is wrong. I care little for the consumer here when I consider that the South African economy is based on two labour codes, the white man getting at least treble his African counterpart doing the same work. In the mining industry a survey showed that the white-black earnings gap, which was 12 to 1 in 1911, was 18 to 1 in 1966. This is the reason why the country’s gold, coal, and diamond deposits can be profitably mined. Instead of businessmen coming to me, I suggest they examine their consciences.—Yours, etc., M. O’NEILL.
