MEETING OF COUNCILS
Arrangements were already being made to call a meeting of the metropolitan councils, so it appeared superfluous for the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) to take similar action, said the chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Mr D. B. Rich) yesterday. He was commenting on a statement by the Mayor, published in “The Press” on Saturday, that he would call a meeting of the councils within a fortnight to discuss community projects, including the Commonwealth Games and the Town Hall. "Mr Guthrey must have a short memory,” said Mr Rich. “At a joint meeting last year to discuss money for the Civic Orchestra, I suggested that these meetings should be held annually before council estimates are drawn up. “I said that if other councils agreed, Waimairi would be happy to call a meeting. This was agreed to, Mr Guthrey supporting the idea and saying he .would be happy to co-operate. Waimairi will be calling this meeting, and I have already discussed it with the county clerk (Mr J. Reid.” It is likely to be in about a month before councils consider their estimates. “It seems strange that Mr Guthrey now proposes to call his own meeting, which would be superfluous in view of the earlier decision. There is no need for two meetings.”
