Italian ’Quake 14 dead

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyripho TUSCANIA (Italy). Feb 7. A strong earthquake battered the ancient Etruscan town of Tuscan ia in central Italy last night, killing at least 14 people and injuring 100. Officials feared that the casuality toll would rise as rescue workers dug into the rubble of collapsed buildings. Many of the historic sites dating back eight centuries before Christ were in ruin. The earthquake, with an intensity of six on the 10-point Mercalli scale, rocked the town at 7 p.m. local time, catching most of Tuscania's 12,000 inhabitants indoors. The tremor was brief, but mighty. People fled their homes in chaos as walls and ceilings and even bridges collapsed.
