Record to Miss Wright

Miss J. Wright, who has been discarded from two New Zealand teams in the last month, indicated she will still be a top contender for several titles at the national championships at Palmerston North later this month, when she won the women’s 200 metres freestyle event in a Canterbury record time at the South Island championships at the Centennial Pool on Saturday. Miss Wright, who had

appeared out of condition over the last few weeks, swam with a much easier style and considering she had no competition her effort in breaking Miss J. Parkhouse’s time by .2sec and recording 2min 16.5 sec was all the more commendable. Miss Wright’s swim was the highlight of the championships, which were lacking in real interest because of the absence of the South Island’s top swimmers, seven of whom are in the New Zealand team at present touring with the West German team.

Four other Canterbury records were broken during the afternoon, two being set by E. Box (Elmwood), who broke the under 12 boys’ 100 metres freestyle record for the sixth time this season. Box, swimming in the under 14 boys’ event, recorded Imin 6.7 sec to slice a remarkable .7sec off his previous record. Box’s time also broke the under 13 record by .2sec. The record was previously held by A. Atkinson, and was set last season.

Miss J. Tomlinson showed more of the excellent form of the last few weeks when she bettered Miss J. Parkhouse’s under 14 200 metres freestyle record. Although she only reduced the record by .3sec with a time of 2min 25sec, by beating Miss Parkhouse’s time Miss Tomlinson enhanced the reputation that she will be one of the country’s top swimmers within a couple of seasons. R. Gray who was selected in the New Zealand team to tour with the. Canadians, showed near peak form when he beat his own junior boys’ 200 metres individual medley record by .3sec. He recorded 2min 32.95ec for the event.

Although Canterbury was without four of its top swimmers. it still had enough depth among the remaining competitors to gain a good win over Otago in the points tally. Southland. which did well in the junior events, did not have the swimmers to keep up with the two larger centre’s in the senior events and finished well behind the other two centres in the final tally. „ Swimmers generally appeared in better condition than they had in the last few weeks, probably because they are now building up for the national age-group championships and open nationals which will be held in two weeks time.

Points for each centre were as follows: Canterbury 254. Otago 217, Southland 147, Nelson-Marl-borough 69, Eastern Districts 62. Abbreviations used in the following results are (C) Canterbury (E.D.)
