Leeds beaten, lead cut

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. An early goal by the Welsh international, J. Toshack, halted the progress of the English first division soccer leader, Leeds United, on Saturday, and cut its advantage over the secondplaced Arsenal to three points.

Toshack scored in the second minute when another world international, G. Sprake, failed to clear a shot from P. Boersma, and Liverpool hung on grimly to a 1-0 win. Arsenal, on the other hand snatched a late winner against Manchester City to improve its chances of capturing the first division championship. J. Radford scored the vital goal with only three minutes play left.

Leeds has 43 points from 28 matches and Arsenal 40 points from 27. Chelsea, 4-0 winners at Newcastle, is third, and Wolverhampton Wanderers,

which won 2-0 at Blackpool, is fourth, each with 34. Tottenham Hotspur slipped from third place to fifth on 32, with a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United.

Sheffield United, 2-1 winner over Luton Town, drew level on points with Hull City in the tight struggle for the second division leadership, when Hull was* held to a draw at Leicester. Aberdeen and Celtic, the top two in the Scottish first' division, both suffered shock defeats. The -elegationthreatened Dunfermline Athletic beat Aberdeen, and St Johnstone defeated Celtic.
