Victory in last over to Old Collegians

Although Lancaster Park had the advantage of the morning’s play when two wickets were taken In the forty-ninth over to square the bonus points total, Old Collegians had the final say tn the last over of the day by scoring the eight runs needed for victory. In contrast to the previous Saturday, the batsmen on both sides did justice to the good Elmwood pitch and some attractive batting was seen. Lancaster Park scored briskly in the second innings against some friendly bowling and If the youthful G. de Latour suffered most at the hands of the batsmen he could draw solace from the fact that the scoring rate invited the declaration which led to his team’s win. Old Collegians

had to score 161 runs in 120 min and this was achieved mainly through aggressive batting from D. A. Pickering. Two balls were lost in the shrubbery surrounding the field during the chase for runs, the last at 5.38 p.m. when 40 runs were still needed, and these distractions increased the tension.

Pickering went to the wicket when his side’s cause seemed hopeless, for 67 runs were re* quired tn a little over 30min, but with the help of R. G. Fraser he struck the ball to such good effect that when he left at 141 the win was more than a possibility. Fraser carried on with the help of de Latour, defying the Lancaster Park efforts to close the game up. H. J. Taylor was Instrumental in gaining four batting points for Old Collegians with some bold hitting and D. S. Banks laid the foundation for the second innings with competent batting. A. M. McKendry (Lancaster Park) completed a good double for the match, and M. D. Randle and C. K. Baker also showed batting of quality. B. C. Irving bowled well throughout the day and W. R. Wilson in the first innings and D. J. McKendry in the second had some success on the unresponsive pitch and had the Lancaster Park fieldsmen held the catches McKendry’s sporting declaration might have treated him more kindly.
