Darfield water scheme nearing completion
Work should be completed on the Darfield high-pressure water supply by the end of this month, the county engineer (Mr W. J. Bevis) said at a meeting of the Malvern County Council yesterday. Although the pumps had been installed, the chlorination plant was held up on the Sydney wharf, he said. Supplying water to McLaughlin Road and the High School might be delayed pending land agreements. The chairman (Mr C. O. Redfern) and the county clerk (Mr B. W. Perrin) were asked to arrange for a tum-ing-on ceremony.
Conditions were fixed for the sale of 21 sections in a council subdivision for housing in Kimberley Road and Homdon Street. The closing date for applications was set at March 12, with prices from $lOOO to $l3OO, and deposits of from $5O to $55. After a discussion on the cost of having underground wiring in the subdivision and its possible effect on section prices, Mr Bevin was asked to get firm prices. Preference for the Calvin Hall comer as a community centre site for Darfield was approved, with the second choice a site in the domain. The council agreed to discuss the question with the Darfield Hall Committee. Negotiations were authorised with the Anglican and Presbyterian Churches and the High School board to buy land for reading and other purposes at the hall comer. Tile council agreed to investigate extension of the county town boundary to include the land between the State Highway and Homdon Street, and Cardale Street land where an industrial subdivision is proposed. Water danger.—As water lying on the Hawkins Bridge was a danger to traffic, the drainage would be corrected by drilling holes in the concrete deck and levelling the surface with hot mix at a cost of about $l4OO, said Mr Bevis. Water races.—There had been complaints, particularly at Greendale, of a shortage
of water in races, said Mr Bevis. It was true that cleaning work was behind, but farmers refused to have cleaning plant operating in standing crops and uncut gorse hedges were no help. Traffic.—The Ministry of Transport said that Mr B. King would take up his duties soon as resident traffic inspector. Formerly, the county shared an inspector. Efforts will be made to find a house for him at Darfield.
