“Call tour off”
(N.Z. Press Association) KAWAKAWA. Feb. 5. The Halt AU Racist Tours Organisation today sent a telegram to the New Zealand SurfLifesaving Association saying it intends strenu-
ously to oppose the visit to New' Zealand of South African Surf Lifesavers. “There is no question of our opposition to the tour,” said H.A.R.T.’s national chairman (Mr T. Richard), in a statement. New Sport “We are firmly and implacably opposed to it. At a time when an increasing number of New Zealanders are trying to bring to an end all forms of sporting contacts with South Africa, the establishment of a new sporting contact is a matter of real concern. “This is the first time South African and New Zealand surf life-savers have met. “There is no doubt that this South African team has been chosen on racial lines. For such a selected team to visit New Zealand in 1971, the United Nations Year for Combating Racism and Racial Discrimination, is a matter, of gravest concern. Choice of day “That the two teams should compete on SharpevtUe Day is indicative of either moral bankruptcy or ignorance by those who are in a position to call this tour off,” Mr Richard said.
