Urlwin still out of favour

(By a golf reporter) ' The spending of more than $lOO of his own money, and going to the extreme of having his luxuriant growth of hair cut, has failed to win the Russley golfer, G. Urlwin, a place in the Canterbury under 21 team. Urlwin was a surprise omission late last year from the national coaching school, and there was a suggestion then that this was because of his long hair. Whether or not this was true, Urlwin took no chances 1 a week ago, and had his I hair cut for the Templeton Summer Open. More significantly, however,; was that Urlwin went specially to Napier a week before, for the national under 23 stroke championships, in an effort to gain a place in the Canterbury team. He was fifth in a strong field, six strokes behind the winner from Wellington, C. Castle, and ahead of P. Shadlock, a semi-final-ist in last year’s national; championships, and various Freyberg Rose Bowl players. He is also the Canterbury under 21 champion, and was fifth amateur in the:

I Garden City Classic in December. But it appears Urlwin’s reputation for fieriness on a golf course may have weighed against him in the selection of the final four.
