TWO PARUNS IN CUP TEAM

(By our tennis reporter)

New Zealand now has the 'unprecedented selection of two brothers in its Davis Cup side—the Wei* lingtonians, O. Parun, aged 23, who will be a member for the fifth year, and D. A. Parun, aged 21, who is in for the first time.

The other player, named, second to O. Parun is the 20-year-old J. G. Simpson (North Shore), who was the fourth in the 1969 team and third last year when B. E. Fairlie was a member before he turned professional.

The team was chosen by the national selectors (Mr E. D. White, of Palmerston North, Mrs D. I. M. Anderson, of Wellington, and Mr R. B. Brown, of Canterbury). TO PLAY AUSTRALIA The players to oppose the Australian Davis Cup side in an international match at Wellington next week-end were also announced yesterday. They are D. A. Parun, Simpson and I. Beverley (Waikato), reserve.

New Zealand has entered the North American zone of the cup, as it did last year. The draw has not yet been announced but the seedings are Canada, New Zealand and British West Indies. Last year, New Zealand lost to Canada after beating Mexico. So it is bound to be drawn against either Mexico or British West Indies. Nominations have been called for a captain-manager of the team, but it has been suggested that if someone suitable at present overseas

can be obtained to do the job, he might be chosen.

It is obvious this has in mind L. A. Gerrard and I. S. Crookenden, formerly New Zealand cup players now living and coaching tennis in the Unjted States. D. A; Parun, who made a private tour overseas last year by working his passage, was elated when he heard the announcement yesterday. The selectors must have taken into account his grand performance against the Czech,. Cednik, on Wednesday, and the general improvement in his play.

The disappointed man is again R. N. Hawkes, of Canterbury. He was a member of the 1969 side, but was not chosen last year although later being ranked second to O. Parun on the national list.
