Allowances payable are:— (a) Cost of Living Allowance—sWS4oo p.a. for married appointee. (b) Child Allowance—SWSllo p.a. for each dependent child residing with contract officer in Western Samoa. (c) Deferred Inducement Allowance—sWS2oo p.a. payable at completion of service in Western Samoa. (d) Re-establishment Grant —$WS6O each in respect of officer and his wife and SWSIO for each dependent child and subject to conditions of contract. (e) Soft Furnishing Allowance —up to SWSSO (f) Boarding Allowance—sWS23o p.a. Houses are provided for married appointees at a rental ranging from $360 p.a. up to $4BO p.a. depending on the value of accommodation allocated. Single appointees are not provided with houses and are only entitled to Inducement and Reestablishment Allowances. Furlough at the rate of two working days for each completed month of service is granted in place of and not in addition to school holidays, on completion of a term of service. At present the currency value is SNZI equals SWSO.BO approximately. Suitably qualified wives of appointees may be considered for teaching positions at local rates after arrival in Samoa. These rates vary from SWSI23O to SWSIS2S according to qualifications and experience. SAMOA COLLEGE This is the largest and main academic postprimary school in Western Samoa with a roll of over 600 selected boys and girls ranging from F.IH to F.VI Future development of this school will emphasise its academic aspect and provision of education at the fifth and sixth forms level. The staff should have the vision and ability to assist with the planning of curricula-developments which will meet the requirements of the gifted students destined for higher education overseas or for senior positions within Western Samoa. The main external examinations taken from the school are the N.Z. School Certificate and University Entrance Examinations. The school is situated on the outskirts of Apia and provides hostel accommodation for 120 boarders. 1. PRINCIPAL— The position needs an energetic and adaptable man with a sound background of successful teaching and experience in administration of a school. Applicants should have at least a Master of Arts degree and be well versed in the requirements of the two New Zealand examinations syllabuses i.e. School Certificate and University Entrance. Salary: Ist year $5260 plus usual allowances. 2nd and 3rd year $5435 plus usual allowances. 2. FIRST ASSISTANT— This position should be filled by a graduate majoring in Science. The holder is required to teach and to assist in administration work as required by the Principal. Salary: Ist year $4720 plus usual allowances. 2nd and 3rd year $4920 plus usual allowances. AVELE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE This is a boys’ school situated on the outskirts of Apia in attractive surroundings. It has a roll of approximately 200 boys—the majority are boarders. The school prepares students for the New Zealand School Certificate, but future developments include some courses which will prepare local planters for life in Western Samoa. 1. FIRST ASSISTANT— Applicants should be well qualified and experienced teachers and should give details of their experience in a specific teaching area. Must be prepared to assist with hostel and farm supervision. Salary: Ist year $3515 plus usual allowances. 2nd and 3rd year $3715 plus usual allowances. SALAFAI HIGH SCHOOL This is a co-educational school of approximately 200 pupils situated on the island of Savai’i. The boys are accommodated in a hostel on the premises and girls attend as day-pupils. The School aims at a good general secondary education although considerable agricultural work is also done. 1. PRINCIPAL— The Principal has responsibility for the school, hostel and the school farm. The Principal will have teaching duties in addition to his administrative responsibilities and applicants should give details of their experience in a specific teaching area. Applicants should be graduates with teacher training or a Diploma in Education and must be adaptable and self-reliant people capable of giving professional guidance to a staff with varied qualifications. Some interest in agricultural work would be an added recommendation. Salary: Ist year $4BOO plus usual allowances. 2nd and 3rd year $5OOO plus usual allowances.
