Reggio clashes

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) REGGIO CALABRIA (Italy), February 4. Thousands of riot police patrolled the shattered streets of central Reggio today to guard against new outbreaks of the street violence in which 65 persons were injured yesterday. But the police were barred from working class quarters at both ends of the city where demonstrators have hurriedly raised the barricades again, cutting themselves off from the rest of the city. Smouldering anger among Reggio’s 160,000 inhabitants reached new heights after police charged an unauthorised march by thousands of citizens and then fought a 20-minute battle with teargas and truncheon charges yesterday. Sporadic fighting continued throughout the day, and the city was in a bitter mood as it entered the fifteenth day of a general strike which has been marked by repeated bomb blasts and clashes between guerrilla bands and police.

The citizens want Reggio to be named capital of the Calabria region instead of the smaller town of Catanzaro to the north.
