FISHING DISPUTE

Move by Ecuador (N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 5. Ecuador has asked the United States to withdraw her military aid mission from Quito because of Washington’s refusal to lift an embargo on arms sales. The Ecuadorian Foreign Minister (Mr Jose Marie Ponce), in an announcement at the Organisation of American States meeting in Washington, said that the military mission had no further reason to be in Quito.

Last week, Washington suspended arms sales to Ecuador for one year in retaliation for her seizure of tuna boats violating the 200mile territorial limit it claims. The United States recognises only a 12-mile limit. The United States maintains a military mission of about 20 men in Quito. The O.A.S. Foreign Ministers have urged both Ecuador and America to exercise restraint in the dispute, and to renew negotiations.
