5-acre subdivisions

Sir,—The opposition expressed by Cr A. Mclntosh, of the Ashley County Council to the increased subdivision of good farmland into small lots, especially in the Lobum district, is long overdue and deserves strong support. Although many of us would enjoy possessing our “God’s own acre,” such subdivision can only be detrimental to the welfare of the entire population. Large areas of wide, open and undivided countryside are not only essential for sound economic growth, but also for the mental and physical wellbeing of the people. A fiveacre subdivision is the first step leading towards further subdivision and to the eventual establishment of another satellite collection of smoke stacks around the “big smoke.” In spite of constant pressure from certain groups the Eyre County Council has maintained a responsible attitude towards the question of subdivisions and neighbouring councils must do likewise.—Yours, etc., C.R.P. February 4, 1971.
