Floating oil from ships

Sir,—Those concerned with floating oil from shipping should be interested in the Torrey Canyon disaster. Detergents proved expensive, and did far more damage to marine life than did the oil itself. It takes a long time, a year or more, for such marine life to recover. Elephant fish, etc., cannot return until a new crop of shellfish has become established. For clearing oil from the inner harbour at Lyttelton may I suggest using a floating boom of hay or straw, or both, to sweep the oil from the surface. After use the boom would be drawn ashore and burnt as as soon as dry enough.— Yours, etc., ARTHUR LUSH. February 7, 1971.
