Australian migration procedures
Sir, —Yesterday I went to the Christchurch Airport to see three friends off on a Sydney-bound aircraft. After much delay, we were told these people were not allowed on board as they did not possess an Australian accent or passport. The two gentlemen were naturalised Australians (one a Lebanese, the other a Jordanian), but the young lady was the New Zealand fiancee of the Jordanian. The humiliation and frustration these people had to face was quite uncalled for. We were told this was because Australia Day was being observed and the offices concerned were closed. Finally today these three folk were allowed off the ground after proving their identity through the necessary channels.—Yours, etc., PERTURBED. February 2, 1971. [The Australian Government Trade Commissioner in Christchurch (Mr A. R. Tayson) replies: “This situation does unfortunately arise from time to time in cases where naturalised Australians do not take with them evidence of citizenship when travelling outside Australia.”]
