School building goes to farm

From classrooms to grain store—this is the transformation intended for a 90-year-old building which was relocated this week in the Broomfield district, about four miles north of Amberley. This former Broomfield School building was replaced by a modem classroom block which opened for the 1971 school year; and it goes about two miles to the “Holleth Hills” property of Mr J. C. Streeter. The huge articulated transporter used in the move was fitted with a' hydraulic deck which could be raised for the load to clear the handrails at each narrow bridge on the route. The school’s roll has changed little during the whole of its 90 years. It was opened as the Kowai North Main School in 1877. When the building now being moved was opened in 1881, the name was changed to Broomfield. It had a roll of 28 then. The present roll is 33 and is likely to remain fairly steady for several years, said the headmaster (Mr A. G. Winnicott), who is one of the two teachers at the school, [ The photograph shows the building on the last : stage of its journey to the ' farm.
